Let's Read Books!

source unknown

I have been a reading fool lately! And by lately, I mean all my life. Ha. I finally gave in to the electronic reader when I received a Kindle for Christmas. Man, that thing is dangerous. Books at my fingertips? Ok, buy, buy, buy. I still need to learn the whole lending library deal but for right now, I bought myself a few books and haven't regretted one. So here's what's been read lately…

First up, my girl Rainbow Rowell. Even though a few of her books are considered YA, they're all really good, easy reads. The YA ones are the kind that make you wistful for your teenage years, if only they were nothing like your real teenage years. She only has a few books out but I think my fave is Fangirl. But read anything, they're all fun.

I also read The Goldfinch, because everyone else was doing it. And why yes, I would jump off a bridge, Mom, thanks for asking.  It took me awhile to get to the point where I was like YES, this book has finally hooked me. But once it did, it had me til the end.

I'm a fan of J. Courtney Sullivan too and eagerly awaited her most recent book, The Engagements. It was a tad bit disappointing. The story is centered around the woman who created the Debeers slogan "A Diamond is Forever" and it follows the stories of a few other women and the connection with the engagement ring. Some of the characters are unlikeable but I enjoy her writing, if that makes any sense. It's a pretty easy, light read if you're bored.

I'm also currently in the middle of The Sisterhood by Helen Bryan and I'm hooked. It switches back and forth between present day and Spain in the 1500's during the Spanish Inquisition and surrounds a convent and all of the interesting women that float through.

And for anybody in the event business, I also read Preston Bailey's Dear Preston. I read it in a day but it was full of good, practical advice for those of us wanting big things out of our businesses.

Every time I do a book post, everyone tells me to join Goodreads. Well I finally did while back and use it pretty often. Are you on there? The name's Shannon Wellington if you want to be friends. And if you didn't know my name. Otherwise, I always want to hear your book recs!

I have been really dropping the ball lately with reading books. But you are inspiring me to put down my computer and pick up ... my e-reader? ;)

I loved "Fangirl!' I'm reading B.J. Novak's short story collection right now, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. I think maybe he's going for a David Sedaris vibe, but I'm iffy about whether it's working.

Currently Reading: Truth and Beauty by Ann Patchett and And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini. Because reading multiple books at the same time is always a good idea.

Just finished and highly recommend:
The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion (cute and funny), Tell the Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt (be prepared for lots of tears), and The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh (also lots of tears).
