For someone who despises hair washes and getting his face wet in the tub, he loved getting mollywopped in the dome by the waves last week. He'd sputter out the salt water and go back for more.
Dear Gabe,
Well dude, another year has gone by. You are now the big two. On one hand, I love it because I like saying I have a two year old. On the other, people hear the word "two" and seem to think that a little brother or sister should be coming along any day now. I tell them to hold their horses. You have been much too awesome to think about having another kid yet. Also, that is a little bit of a lie. You are also very frustrating and whiny at times, which helps with the one child situation. But anyway, we love the crap out of you and I know I say it every month, but man, you are just the best and you just keep getting better! You've been knocking the learning thing out of the park this month so that's mostly what I remember so, this month...
- You have mastered your alphabet. You can say, recognize and point out every single letter, capital and lowercase. Even those pesky U's and V's, which come down to a single point. You've got em and I think that's just awesome.
- You learned your numbers! You kinda knew 1-2-3 for awhile but as we've been playing Curious George number games (pbs kids website is the shit), you've soaked up 1 to 10 and can now recite them and identify em. Except for 7. You choose to ignore 7.
- You rock at knowing your colors too. Sometimes you switch up black and white and your favorite one is "booooo!!" I should probably mention that my method for teaching you colors might have been via freeze pops. You can only have the ones you identify. Yep, you learned real quick.
- You love to pretend to sleep, or snooze, as you call it. You'll pretend snore then tell us to "ssshhhh ssshhhh ssshhhh!" Luckily your usual alarm sound of a high pitched scream has been replaced by a quick count of 1-2-3-4-5. When daddy brings you in to wake me up in the morning, you tap my back and say "Mama, 1-2-3-4-5!" It's adorable.
- You've learned the word cat but still refer to our own cat as Meow. The weird part is that Sebbi doesn't meow at all.
- You've declared yourself free of the booster seat at home. You chose a kitchen table chair one night, climbed up and have been content to eat your dinner without any boost every night. You've also been a bit more behaved in restaurants lately, which is awesome. Or maybe it's just that your dad and I have got this shit down!
- You love when things match, as in, you have two of them. You'll hold up your shoes and yell Match! You'll hold up a fork and a spoon and yell Match! It's like you know that these things go together. Geeeeenius.
We're so proud of the smart little guy that you're becoming and you still never cease to make us crack up. We love you buddy bear. Happy 2nd Birthday!!!
Love, Mama
We've got the big birthday party tomorrow so I'll be back next week with all the twinkley party stuff!
Also, I hope my listing of Gabe's accomplishments doesn't sound like an obnoxious braggy mom. I know that sometimes I read things like this (hopefully much worse) on the internet and roll my eyes, like, yeah I'm sure he or she does that or knows that. You know what I mean? Like, little Shiboopy just aced the LSAT! At only three and a half! I just don't ever want to be that mom. Don't let me be that mom. I rely on you.

It's not bragging if your kid iis a boy genius!!! Also, I started reading your blog when you were just about to leave work to start your maternity leave. How is he already two??? You have clearly raised a sweet, smart, adorable little boy and you should be very proud! Happy bday Gabe!!
I just looked at your little picture montage, and it occured to me: he's practically an adult!
Congrats on two years of successful parenting (and managing to have an awesome time doing it), and Happy Birthday Gabe!
Happy Birthday Gabe!
Who needs the number seven, anyway? Happy birthday to your beautiful, happy boy. :)
That's pretty darn impressive for two. Of course, wait until three when the little one starts telling you the wrong answer to all your questions because A. kids don't perform when you want them to and B. it's fun to see mom get flustered! LOL What an exciting age 2 is with lots of discoveries. Enjoy it!
I love reading about Gabe! Happy birthday to that awesome kid!
PS -Thomas skipped 5 forever and now it's his favorite number...apparently he feels that he needed to make up for lost time with it. There are a lot of 5s at Target..."I SEE ANOTHER 5!" Maybe Gabe will love 7?
You don't sound braggy, but man, it freaks me out because Charlie just turned 2 and doesn't do ANY of that. I get proud when he tells me he's about to poop....just a late bloomer we hope!
Oh, those photos of Gabe make me sniffly for my own boys when they were two :( I love that age. I can't wait to see party pictures. Have a perfect day tomorrow. Happy Birthday, Gabe!! And you could NEVER be THAT mom, Shannon...
He is adorable! I read this post and couldn't help thinking how much you will love coming back to read it next year and the year after as a reminder of how he's changed and grown.
Happy Birthday! Can't wait to see party pictures!
How is he two years old already? Happy Birthday Gabe! And happy second anniversary of motherhood Shannon!
Oh my gosh, you will never be that mom! You are not braggy at all. I love your doses of reality you sprinkle in your updates, too. Actually, when I read your updates I read it as a letter to Gabe that he will get to read when he is older. How cool would that be to have updates like this from when we were kids?!
Happy, happy birthday to Gabe! As another reader mentioned, I too found your blog right before Gabe was born and it has been fun getting to know him and you over the last few years!
I cant believe he is already two! I've been following you for more than 2 years now! He's just so big and seems like such a great little man. I love hearing all his accomplishments, because then I know what fun stuff I have to look forward to with Caroline. Happy Birthday Gabe! Have a great party little dude!
Happy Birthday Gabe! I'm sure you had an awesome party!
@Claire hahaha thanks so much for the affirmations! And the bday wishes! And I know, I remember you winning the giveaway right before he was born, the same day I was on YHL. It's been awhile!
@KP Blasphemy! You meant to say he looks like an infant, right? Because I'm trying to keep him from aging.
@Leigh Thank you!!
@MrsKinne Sevens are worthless. You're right. Ha. Thanks!
@GirlRural I'm starting to see that they're not trained monkeys! I tell someone he can count to 10 and then he looks at me like I'm crazy and refuses to do it. Way to make me look like an idiot, way to go...
@Emily Thanks bud!
@Mollie Oh thanks, I don't want to sound like an a-hole. See, Gabe doesn't mention poop at all so Charlie's clearly onto something! I swear the computer games made him learn to count in under a week, it's awesome.
@Michele Thanks so much Michele, I know, I'm going to look back and weep at this preciousness! And thanks for the vote of confidence in not being the obnoxious mom ;)
