I hosted a birthday dinner party for my friend Adrienne at our house last month. Adrienne loves herself some polka dots and I had been itching to make a mint green cake, so that's where my little theme came from. I actually ended up making two cakes because I was insistent on making a mini cake. After I realized a mini cake would feed only mini me, I whipped up another one of Betty C.'s finest to feed the rest of the crowd. I had seen the swirly rosette technique on pinterest, and surprisingly, I thought I did an okay job for my first go at it.
As per my usual, I didn't use tablecloths, I used Ikea curtain panels to cover the tables. They have a pretty sheen to them, which was kinda perfect for my little winter wonderland thing I had going on.
The placemats are actually pieces of fabric paper that I found on clearance at Michaels. I was okay using them if they were just paper so the fact that they had a linen-type texture to them made them look a little fancier.
Pom pom trim turned napkin rings
I had some mint green tissue paper that I literally stuffed into some jars last minute, mostly because I like a full table. You know, one covered with tons of shit? I just keep adding and adding. Oh green grocery store flowers for four bucks? You'll work.
See that flatware? It's from the Dollar Tree. I thought it looked pretty darn good for being plastic.
I guess I'll let you in on the secret that I was trying to mix my icing to exactly match the little table. Do you do that sort of thing? Get it in your head what something is supposed to look like then go mad trying to make it happen? It also happened when I was making icing for Gabe's birthday cupcakes. Maybe I just have an icing problem? Yeah I think I definitely have an icing problem. On many levels.
I added a quick little paint chip banner tied with minty green ribbons to the chair of our guest of honor. Just for kicks.
And now, straight out of the camera with the dreaded flash, how things looked within an hour or two...
Hope you had a marvelous birthday A!

wow, i love it!! and the mini cake is the best. i never would have thought about using a green like that as a main color, but it totally works! makes it very winter-esque. nice job!

you are excellent at both! :)
For the record, you definitely don't have an icing problem. That cake is gorgeous! As is the whole darn party.
Happy New Year!
So fun! I love the pom-pom napkin rings. You are so creative. The cake looks great, I was also thinking the roses would be hard. Maybe I'll find a reason to bake a cake soon.
...Just a reminder that my birthday is June 13th. You and JEGs can plan me a surprise party-- I'll act like I didn't know.
Seriously though, that came together beautifully!
